About Haikuvies

What's a Haikuvie?

Haikuvie = Haiku + Movie.

More precisely, a Haikuvie takes a movie and sums it up in 7 haiku. It is an attempt to capture the essence of the film and mix in bits of commentary and humor along the way. Because, if the world needs anything, it's more tasteless joke haiku stinking up the Internet ether. Ethernet. Whatever.

Why 7 haiku?

In the spirit of the underlying haiku form, I wanted to constrain the length and structure of the Haikuvie in order to challenge the author and mollify the reader. Also, 7 plays into the 5 + 7 + 5 haiku pattern. It just seemed like a good length.

Why are you doing this website?

For my amusement. And hopefully yours. And if I make some extra cash to put in the kids' college savings, even better. :)

Also, I wanted to create something new that provided a fun, creative outlet apart from my day job. Joke haiku are far from original, and have been applied to cinema with things like "Haiku Movie Reviews." I wanted to go beyond the typical single-haiku-per-movie approach.

Who came up with Haikuvies?

I did. When the name popped into my head and I registered haikuvies.com on December 30, 2007, there were exactly zero results for "haikuvie OR haikuvies" on Google. So, the name and format are original, to my knowledge.

Hasn't haiku taken enough abuse on the web?

Yes. But this is all in good fun. I mean no disrespect to actual poets or to the profound, centuries-old art of haiku. These aren't even real haiku... they're more like zappai or senryu at best.

Do Haikuvies contain anything objectionable like spoilers or swearing?

Yes, as sure as Rosebud was a damn sled.
